Hide and sheep

Description
In this game, ‘shepherds’ must seek their lost ‘sheep’ as quietly as possible, to carefully herd them home.
Resources
Whistles
Before you begin
- Find an area with plenty of walls, trees or bushes for the sheep to hide behind. Avoid setting the game near obvious hazards such as roads or rivers.
- Set out the playing field using surrounding paths, hedgerows or walls in order to create clear boundaries.
- Agree on a time limit or signal to stop play. Something like a long blast on a whistle works well. One whistle could be used to start play and the next to signal returning to the start.
- Divide the group. A fifth of the players should act as sheep and everyone else should play shepherds. [For example, in a group of 25 young people five will be sheep, 20 will be shepherds.]
Instructions
Instructions for sheep
- When the whistle goes, spread out and find a place to hide. Don’t hide together (unless you’ve been paired up). There will be a delay before the shepherds can start finding you.
- Your goal is to find all the other sheep and avoid capture by the shepherds.
- To help find each other, baa like a sheep as loudly as possible.
Instructions for shepherds
- Before the whistle goes, turn away from the playing area to give the sheep a chance to hide.
- After about two minutes, the person in charge will blow a whistle signalling your time to look for the sheep.
- Your goal is to herd sheep into a position where they can be caught and then tagging them.
- Listen out for the sheep baaing in order to find them. Remember to be as quiet as possible so you can sneak up on them.
How the game works
- Once a sheep is caught (by being tagged), they should stay where they are.
- A sheep can free another sheep by tagging them if they are caught.
- The sheep win if time runs out before all the sheep are caught or if all the sheep find each other.
- The shepherds win if all the sheep are caught before the time runs out.
