Chat about games:
1. The person leading the activity should ask everyone whether they play any online games. The games could be on a phone, games console or computer.
NB: Not everyone plays online games and that’s OK – they can still be involved in this activity.

2. The person leading the activity should ask everyone if the games they play have any adverts, or any ways to spend real money to get things in the game.
NB: Lots of online games will make money by showing adverts or selling in-game items for real money.

Play a game:
3. As a group, decide on a favourite quick game to play for this activity.

4. The person leading the game should explain the new rules that make the game a bit more like an online game by mimicking some of the features people may come across.

5. Everyone should get stuck into the game with the new rules.

New rule ideas
- Give teams a small number of tokens that they have to use to buy better equipment to improve their chances (or make the game last longer, for example, by having extra turns).
- Every time someone scores a point, everyone has to pause to sing a song. This means their game is interrupted and they have to wait, just like how adverts interrupt the game.
- Team could even use some of their tokens to ‘skip the ad’.
- Players have to give their name or some information about themselves to be allowed to join in.

Discuss and reflect:
6. Everyone should chat about how the new rules changed the game.

7. You could think about questions like: did the new rules make the game more fun or less fun? Did people spend all of their tokens? What would they have done if the tokens were real money? Were people happy to share information to play the game? What sort of information would they be comfortable sharing?

8. Everyone should chat about the different things they may experience in online games and why it’s important to be careful when playing games online.

9. You could think about questions like: how do people interact with games? What other media do they consume while they’re gaming? What are the problems with online games – and what can people do about them? What factors affect what people trust online? What should people do if online content affects them?
