Description
Teaching game for the scouts to learn how to set a compass bearing
Resources
2 buckets
2 broom handles
4 compasses
1 long thick rope
Instructions
lay the rope out in a large circle at least 20 m in diameter
put a scout from each patrol in the circle with a bucket on their head so they can't see where their opponent is, compass in hand and holding a broom handle
move the scout around the circle then pick one patrol to go first, the patrol with the other compass gives their scout the bearing and number of paces to their opponent
the scout then sets their compass and walks on that bearing for the number of paces when they stop they raise the broom handle up then down in front of them (slowly to avoid injury)
if they make contact the patrol get one point
move the scouts and have the other patrol have their go, swap the scouts under the bucket with another member of the patrol and repeat
I finish off with the patrol leader under the bucket
you can if you have more than 2 patrols have more in the circle, I have 4 patrols and used black buckets for 2 and orange buckets for the other 2 so they had two games going on at the same time
I have found this to be one of the best ways to get the whole troop learning compass bearings very quickly
