Description
Learn the basics of setting up camp:
1. The different tents required for making an efficient campsite (personal and communal)
2. The different style of tents available and their pros/ cons.
3. Demonstrate and lead youth members in pitching and striking tents.
4. Learn how and why a campsite layout is important.
5. How to respect and properly maintain the equipment.
Resources
Suitable communal tent (Mess/ dining / fire shelter etc.)
Varied styles of personal tents (Patrol/ dome/ tunnel etc.)
Other useful equipment: Mallets, spare pegs, cleaning gear,
Patience (Optional)
Instructions
(~10 mins) 1. Explain the basic premise for camping as a group. E.g. The reasons for having tents with designated tasks. (Cooking, food storage, toilet, eating and sleeping plus any other examples.)
(~5 mins) 2. Run through the different styles of tent. Explain why each has its own benefits and strengths over another for a situation.
(~50 mins) 3. Main Activity of Pitching/ Striking. The more experience members can be challenged by additional criteria; blindfold the patrol except one / nominate only one member of a patrol to be able to give instructions but they cannot move or touch anything. or other combinations.
(~5 mins) 4. Describe why having a layout is necessary. Mention how fire gaps are important as well as fire buckets; Keeping sleeping and other areas distanced; making a layout that works for your way of working.
(~10 mins) 5. Explain the importance of properly caring for the equipment; Why tents need to be aired/ dried before being stored; reporting any damage or losses so they can be rectified before the next camp; cleaning tent pegs.
