Aim of Badge
One of the targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 is to ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature by 2030. There are 6 activities in this badge. Activity 1 and 2 are compulsory. Complete any three of the remaining parts 3-6.
Introduction
Activity No. 4. Play a “Sort the Waste” game.
Patrols can devise their own games or variations of this game.
Instructions
1. Divide the girls into two or more teams depending on the materials available and the amount of girls you have playing.
2. Set up the game by placing a pile of pencils for each team at one end of the hall. At the other end line up three hula hoops
opposite each team. These will represent the bins, recycling, compost and the non-sustainable – waste bin.
3. Each team must line up behind their pile of pencils and when a material is called, one girl on each team must grab a pencil and run to place it in the correct bin.
4. A leader or Senior Branch must be there to check the answers, whichever team gets their ‘waste’ into the correct ‘bin’ first gets a point.
5. Keep a note of ‘wastes’ that get put in the wrong places.
6. Repeat for the rest of the list of materials.
7. Keep a tally of points for each team, and the team with the most points at the end wins.
Debrief:
After the game find out whether the girls found it easy or difficult to figure out where things went. Then if there were any that
got put in the wrong ‘bin’ go through these and discuss where people think this ‘waste’ should go and why and what can we do to reduce the non-sustainable waste. (Note: cooked foods cannot be composted at home but can be commercially composted.)
