Instructions
Everyone should get into small groups and discuss ways that they can be kind to each other and what things would be unkind to do.
Adults and helpers should support each small group to think about what might be kind or unkind behaviour. Share the kind and unkind scenarios below with each group to aid discussion.
After five to ten minutes of discussion, everyone should come back together and share some kind and unkind behaviours that they thought of.
The person leading the activity should explain what a code of conduct is (see 'What is a code of conduct').
The small groups should think about what kind and unkind behaviours would be useful to add to a code of conduct.
The person leading the activity can write up the notes to create a ‘code of conduct’ for the group.
Everyone should listen to the code of conduct and discuss whether they think that by following it, the group would be a kinder place.
Everyone should be encouraged to share their thoughts about what they think would make the meeting space a kinder place.
The person leading the activity can also share the promise and discuss how the discussion in the meeting fits in with their promise.
The code of conduct can be placed somewhere in the meeting venue for everyone to see.
Reflection
This activity encouraged everyone to think about how they show care and respect for everyone else in the group.
After finishing taking part in 'how can we be kind?' ask everyone to think about:
Was it more difficult to think about kind actions or unkind actions? Why do you think that is?
Why do you think it is important to have a code of conduct?
