Description

Explore bugs and nature by creating a brightly coloured natural picture.

Resources

Natural materials (for example, leaves, twigs, feathers)

Instructions

Ask everyone to meet at an outside venue such as some woods, a park or a nature reserve.
If it isn’t possible to meet out with the group or to go outside then the person leading the activity should collect natural items such as leaves, bark, pebbles, acorns and bring them along to the meeting. There should be enough for small groups of four or five to make pictures using the materials.

Everyone should get into small groups of between four and five.

Everyone should gather up as many natural materials as possible.

Thinking about the beetles in the story, the groups should try to make a colourful bug picture from the natural items that they have found.

If the group struggles to think of a bug to make, they can take some time to look around the area to find bugs.
After ten to fifteen minutes the person leading the activity should bring everyone back together to share each groups bug picture.
At the end of the session the person leading the activity should make sure that all the natural materials are put back where they were found.

Reflection
This activity encouraged everyone to value the outdoors by being a team player and creating a brilliant bug picture.

After creating their brilliant bug picture, ask everyone to think about -

Did you enjoy making art with natural items?
Why do you think it was important to put the natural items back after we used them?
