Description
Encourage everyone to think about fire safety with this bubbly game.
Resources
Bubble mixture
Cones or ropes to mark start and finish line
Instructions
Ideally play this game outside away from the campfire, however if this does need to be played inside make sure everyone is aware that the bubble mixture might make the floors slippery.
Make sure that no one has any allergies to the bubble mixture, if they do they can help with building the campfire.
The person leading the game should explain that this game will help everyone to understand what to do if there is a fire.
The person leading the game should ask everyone what they would do if they smelt smoke, use the 'what to do if you spot a fire' tips below.
Make this as interactive as possible, asking questions from everyone in the group to find out what they would do and encourage them to think about the effects of their decisions.
The person leading the game should set up a start line and finish line about two to three metres apart.
Everyone should line up at the start line, adults and helpers should stand on either side of the ‘track’ and blow bubbles a few feet above the ground.
When the person leading the game calls 'Go' everyone should try to crawl under the bubbles and get to the finish line without any of the bubbles touching them.
Encourage everyone to look at each others back to see if they have been caught by the bubbles.
The game can be repeated a few times.
Afterwards discuss why learning to crawl underneath a wall of bubbles might be important, if they were ever caught in a building that was on fire using the 'what to do if you spot a fire' top tips.
If You Spot a Fire:
Most importantly, keep calm.
Raise the alarm: shout ‘fire!’ or set off the fire alarm (if there is one).
Get out quickly and efficiently while staying safe. If you’re in a building with lifts, don’t use them.
If there’s smoke, keep low to the ground where the air is clearer.
Call 999 as soon as you’re clear of the building. Stay out of the building until the fire service say you can return.
Most buildings have an assembly point to meet at if there’s a fire. If there isn’t one, stay clear of the fire but go somewhere you’ll be noticed when the fire service arrives.
If you’re trapped in a room, stuff pillows or sheets around the bottom of the door to stop smoke getting in. Open a window, and wave a sheet (or something similar) to show the emergency services where you are
Reflection
This game encouraged everyone to be a courageous citizen by thinking about what they would do if there was a fire and how they could make sure that they are safe.
After playing 'Bubble escape', ask everyone to think about:
How did it feel crawling under the bubbles?
What could you do to make sure that you could crawl away safely in your own homes?
