Instructions
LEADERS INTRO
To earn the badge Scouts must:
"Make or decorate one or more articles using, whenever possible, original design ideas. You should discuss this project beforehand with a member of your leadership team. It should take around six hours to complete the project."
Check the badge page for examples and any updates: https://www.scouts.org.uk/scouts/activity-badges/craft/
WEEK 1:
- Scouts split into groups of 2-4 for this project.
- A leader should explain the badge and that in their groups they are working towards a 4 week craft project.
- Hand out examples / options to whatever your troop thinks best. We went for...
Make & decorate pottery
Make your own tie die
Make &/or decorate a cake (with a parent professional to visit)
Make a mosaic
Make a fabric collage
Make & decorate a candle
Make & decorate a wooden box
There are lots more options on the badge page itself. You can flex your examples/options according to how many leaders and scouts you have.
- In the first week groups should choose what their craft will be, and how they plan to make & decorate it. They should write down their plan on paper and conduct any necessary research (e.g. how to tie die if they have never done if before). They should hand a plan to the leaders to include:
1. What they're making (and why?)
2. A list of equipment they need to buy
3. A basic plan of how they're managing the given timeframe to make it over 2 weeks
4. Any precautions they need to take before starting (e.g. wearing old clothes, covering any tables, cleaning hands first etc.)
5. Any notes for leaders (e.g. do you need any adult help, or how should we store the project in-between the 2 weeks etc.)
WEEK 2:
- This week Scouts need to buy their equipment (bar the basic shared kit you can offer at your meeting place).
- Depending on your area, everyone could go to the shops and split up to find their equipment - or you could order online with a leader.
- It's recommended to give out a budget. Scouts may find they have to adapt their plan to meet this budget and problem solve.
WEEKS 3 & 4:
- Scouts make and decorate their craft.
- Where possible Scouts should take responsibility for the project and teach themselves any required skills (e.g. tie dye instructions, a candle making kit, cake recipes etc.) However there may be some projects where it is more beneficial for a leader to teach at the start (e.g. sewing, woodwork, professional cake decorating etc.)
