Description
An ice breaker activity to allow Scouts to get to know others and share a skill.
Resources
Make various Scouting resources available depending on what you have examples are:
- Poles
- Cord/Rope
- Maps
- Compasses
- Old first aid kit/bandages
- Nature books
Instructions
Have the Scouts split themselves into small groups with at least one other in the group that they don't already know from Scouts, school etc. Group sizes can vary, but the larger the group the longer the activity will take for everyone to share a skill, so pairs or groups of three is probably the ideal.
Ask the Scouts to think of a Scouting skill that they can remember and teach it to the others in their group. Each takes a turn in doing so.
Leaders will need to ensure that they are monitoring the groups for those that might feel self-conscious or not feel they know a skill well enough to share. In those cases, either have the group work together to figure out a skill they collectively may have forgotten (e.g. how to tie a particular kind of knot). If they are still struggling, demonstrate a skill to them and have them learn together.
The objective of this activity is to get the Scouts to have discussions together and feel free to talk to each other. Critically, the objective is not to learn skills in a meaningful or long-term way.
