Combining Uniqueness and Bullying for Guide Units

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Discussing bullying can be hard. This activity is good to have easier conversations with the girls.

The two clauses of Exploring my world are also compulsory leadership clauses.

Resources

Print and cut out the table of different types of bullying.
These could be hand written.

Instructions

Start by sitting in a circle with the leader saying ‘stand up if you…?’ and included siblings, pets, were a Brownie, and then finished with ‘stay sitting if you have been bullied?’. This is the segway to introduce bullying. The girls can be free to talk about how they have been bullied, ways they have seen bullying and anything else that may be constructive.

The leader then introduces the three different types of bullying-verbal, physical and digital/cyber. Discuss what this meant to the girls and if they have examples. The leader then introduces how bullying can be overt and/or covert. This could also be described as private and/or public. Using the four labelled pieces of paper the titles were laid out on the ground in the middle of the circle. The girls then each have a piece of paper with a type of bullying from the table. The girls read out their piece and discuss where it would sit within the matrix. This provides good discussion of how bullying can be both over and covert.

Then discuss the bystander effect. It is good to emphasis that this occurs often in large groups and not necessarily as individuals. You can discuss how to be Upstanders (some girls may be familiar with this concept). Talk about how an individual can be upstanders by using the Recognise, Refuse and Report. This concept was taken from https://www.cfchildren.org/blog/2018/10/addressing-bullying-teaching-children-to-be-active-bystanders/ .

Using this concept the girls created a role play in their patrols about a type of bullying and solution.
