Magical Science Session

Resources

-Piece of paper
- bowl or other container with water
- something to colour with
- scissors
- piece of cardboard (like a cereal box)
- glue stick or white glue
- 2 elastic bands or hair elastics, scissors

Optional: milk, dish soap, food colouring, flat bowl x 2, water, pepper, paper towel, 3 jars or glasses

Instructions

Introduction / Icebreakers
We will go back and forth between activities listed as #1 (demos) and #2 (challenges). If the girls have the optional material they can also complete the demos but we will make sure that they are fun for everyone.

Activity 1 (zoom room)
Demo activities that girls can do on their own as they follow along and/or watch over the screen:
- Magical liquids: dish soap added to milk with food colouring
- Magical liquids 2: Dish soap added to water with pepper
- Inverted arrow water trick
- Will it float?
- Optical illusions
- Walking water

Activity 2 (zoom room)
Challenges for girls to create/try
- Blooming paper flowers in water
- Thaumatrope: Intro to animation
- Body challenges (why can’t you lift your leg while standing next to a wall, why is it harder to touch a spot with one eye closed, why can’t you move your ring finger without your middle finger moving…)
- Hold a book off the ground with a single sheet of paper


Debrief/Discussion
We will debrief on the science of each activity as we go along
