Recycled Arts and Crafts Session

Resources

- Full Newspaper
-Stapler and Staples
- Scissors
-Tape
-Plastic shopping bag (only one is necessary, but multiple bags can be used for a colour variety)
- Glue
-Clean Cardboard/Plastic/Paper Scraps/Any material
-Sheet of paper/card
-Colouring pencils/markers (optional)

Instructions

Introduction / Icebreakers - 15 minutes - On Zoom
Kahoot Quiz - Which is Better? (i.e. Barry's or Lyons Tea, to stir up some friendly debate to get the group talking)

Activity 1 - 30 minutes - On Zoom
Newspaper Basket Weaving
Step One: Take newspaper sheets out of newspaper (10-20 full pages, depending on what size basket is desired)
Step Two: Cut the sheets in half lengthways
Step Three: Fold each strip in half twice
Step Four: Weave the strips together, stapling the strips throughout the process, until you have a square the size
you want the base to be (ensure there is bits of the strips sticking out at the sides - the smaller the base, the taller
the basket, and visa versa)
Step Five: Fold bits sticking out at the sides in a ninety degree angle and continue weaving vertically
Step Six: To create a clean finish, staple any bits sticking out at the top inwards

Activity 2 - 30 minutes - On Zoom
Recycled Friendship Bracelet Making
Step One: Lay bag out flat and cut a horizontal strip
Step Two: Take the rings create by cutting strips and cut so that they are flat strips
Step Three: Repeat until there are three strips
Step Four: Tie the three strips together at the start of the strips
Step Five: Tape the knot to a surface
Step Six: Tightly braid the strips
Step Seven: When the end of the strips are reached, tie a knot the keep the braid in place
Step Eight: Wrap around wrist, and tie both ends together

Debrief/Discussion - 5 minutes - On Zoom
Talk about the importance of the three R’s are (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in the modern society, and how it is important to use our creativity to repurpose and create new things out of materials we would normally throw out.

Activity 3 - Offline - 30 minutes
Textured Collage
Step One: Cut up pieces of cardboard/plastic/other materials
Step Two: Glue down materials onto paper in whatever way deemed suited
Step Three: Add colour using pencils/markers (optional)
