Resources
- Camera/phone to take a photo
Instructions
Introduction / Icebreakers (20 minutes)
- Story Share (could be done in break out rooms with discussion after or together in the zoom room depending on numbers) - Participants are asked to think of their favourite fairytale from childhood and share with the group what their favourite is and why
- What makes a story a fairytale - Using Mentimeter participants submit words they think are key to a fairytale (ex. Once upon a time, Prince/Princess, Happily ever after), Discussion about what we think is most important afterwards
- What kind of roles do girls normally take in fairytales - Again with Mentimeter participants submit words they think are used to describe girls in tales, and what roles they take (Beautiful Princess, Damsel in Distress etc) Discussion about the interlocking of gender roles and traditional fairy tales, how do our values in guiding and how we see women in real life differ to what’s traditionally portrayed in storybooks?
Activity 1 - Story Writing (45 minutes)
As a group we will devise a new fairytale for a new generation, using typical characters and tropes from traditional tales reimagining them through the lens of guiding
- Character Building - The Guide, The SideKick, The Villan. In breakout rooms, groups will be given one of the three characters to design, they’ll be given a set of questions to frame their discussion and help them to design their character. Return to the main zoom room and each group will introduce their character, the rest of the group can make suggestions on what to add to the character//how their character would interact with the others
- World Building - Together we’ll discuss the rules of the world of the story, what does it look like? Where do they live? Is their magic in the world? There will be a set of questions to lead the group in their discussion
- Plot Building - Now that we’ve met our characters and know how the world they live in works, it’s time to create the story. For the activity, the story will be broken into chunks from Once upon a time to happily ever after, and as a group, we’ll discuss what should happen in each part and create the main plot points. The participants will be led in a discussion through each moment, noting down all their thoughts, questions like; How does each character start the story, what conflict happens, how does each character react to that conflict? What do you think the character would say at that moment? How would they feel? While participants are offline doing activity 2 these ideas will be taken and put together into a short fairytalestyle story.
Activity 2 - Illustration Creation (20 minutes)
Offline, participants will have 20 minutes to create a storybook illustration using objects around their house, they can integrate themselves into the image or chose to create completely from objects. They can choose to make something based on the story they’ve been creating in activity 1 or recreate something from their favourite story. Participants should take a photo of what they’ve created and upload their images to padlet where they’ll be able to see what the other people in the group have been creating.
Debrief/Discussion (15 mins)
Together we’ll view the different images that have been uploaded to the padlet and give participants the opportunity to guess and share what story moment each image is from. Then, we’ll read the story that’s been created in activity 1, and everyone will have the opportunity to give feedback and suggest any changes. After the workshop, the digital storybook can be sent to everyone who took part in the activity as a memento.
