Instructions

Learn about water

Everyone should sit so that they can see the device and video.
The person leading the activity should introduce the video.
They should explain that everyone will watch Scouts visit Madagascar (a big African island) to see what WaterAid (an international charity) is doing there.

Play the video.
If anyone is confused, or has any questions, they should ask them once the video has finished.
Everyone should get into a circle, and talk about what they’ve watched.
It might be best to ask questions which everyone can discuss in small groups of three or four, then ask each group to share their answers with the rest of the circle.
Discussion ideas:

It might be best to combine these questions with those in the reflection section.

What was life like for people before WaterAid helped them?
What did WaterAid do?
Why is what WaterAid do important?
What could you do to help WaterAid?

Reflection
This activity reminded you that you’re a local, national, and international citizen. Locally, do we act like water is precious, or do we take it for granted? What did the Madagascan Scouts do to help? Is this similar to the kinds of things you might do? Do we have a responsibility to help people who don’t have clean water and proper toilets? How could you help?

This activity also helped you develop respect and trust for people from different backgrounds. Did anything surprise you about life in Madagascar? How did you feel when you saw how difficult life was before WaterAid helped? How did you feel when people talked about their new taps and toilets? Do you think everyone should have access to toilets and clean water?

Safety
All activities must be safely managed. Use the safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. Do a risk assessment and take appropriate steps to reduce risk. Always get approval for the activity and have suitable supervision and an InTouch process.

Music and films
Make sure music and films are age appropriate for the youngest person present.

Make it accessible
All Scout activities should be inclusive and accessible.
