Resources
Week 1 print outs of various pages from supermarket online shopping to include breads sandwich fillings drinks snacks etc.
Week 1.5 visit or call supermarket to explain activity and offer to share risk assessment and adult cover details
Week 2 a print-out per six detailing the challenge to beat the £3 (sandwich snack drink) meal deal at chosen supermarket, by spending no more than £1.50 per head and getting things to make a sandwich a snack and something to make a drink and some healthy fruit or veg bites for each member of the Six.
Instructions
Week 1 discuss prices and how quality/brand/quantity effect this. Discuss the difference between a numerically higher price verses unit cost of a bulk/multi buy.
Week 2 meet at supermarket carpark, explain challenge and detail rules and safety points
Station adults at end of aisles. Show Cubs the meal deal section and then allow them to shop for their own six. Only offer help where prudent monitoring Sixes from a far where possible. Checkout each Six and ensure they were on budget.
Walk back to HQ or somewhere where they can make sandwiches and drinks etc.
Eat and enjoy.
Discuss what they bought and whether they got a good deal.
RA notes. Check OSM records for allergies. Don't touch things you are not buying, you may damage or break. Don't overstretch to tall shelves, ask an adult. No running. Think of others, stay in your Six. Station adults throughout store and one to watch entrance/exit.
Make sure helpers are briefed especially on route and road crossing procedures. High vis/torch, first aid and Covid action pack to be carried. Instruct on correct use of knives if using. Ensure hands and surfaces are washed or resanitised before food prep. Advise on masks due to proximity and requirements in supermarket.
