Overcoming Barriers (SDGs)
1. Understanding what the impact of gender stereotypes are.
2. Characterise qualities and skills of leaders and the difference between both.
3. Identify skills and qualities that the Guides have that makes them Leaders.
Resources
- paper
- post its or small pieces of paper
- pens, will be required to do a scavenger hunt for items that mean something to them
- coloured sweets i.e., smarties, M&Ms, skittles.
Instructions
Introduction / Icebreakers
Gender Equality:
Introduction to Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 5.
Watch two videos on Gender Inequality and Sterotypes.
Read the story on roles without using pronouns, discuss whether they thought the roles were male or female and why.
Activity 1
Leadership:
Video by IGNITE on I want to be a president but…
Brainstorm who Leaders are, i.e., Moms, teachers, presidents, CEOs, coaches…
On small pieces of paper or post its, girls will be asked to write down the qualities, skills and items that
describe the Leaders.
Afterwards, Guides will be asked to separate their pieces of paper or post its into two different piles, one
qualities that the leader was born with and the other with skills that the leaders learnt. Guides will be asked
to share something they put into each column and see if other Guides put them in the same pile.
Use of digital whiteboard to record some of the answers.
Activity 2
Communications:
Scavenger Hunt: Guides will be asked to find five items that mean something to them, these can be anything whether they are participating at home or in a Unit.
Those that are happy to share will be asked to describe what this item means to them or how it describes them and if it they can think does it match to a quality or a skill of a Leader that the group identified.
Debrief/Discussion
Discuss how it’s important to think of how our own skills and qualities could make us a Leaders and overcome some of the stereotypes of Leaders as men. Final exercise is for girls to take pull 3-5 sweets from their colourful sweets and then think of an answer based on the colour they chose.

Purple: Time you lead something
