Instructions
Before you begin
Put together a playlist of music that can be used as an example of the different types of music. These could include:
Classical; Rock music; Hip-hop/Rap; Pop; Jazz; Reggae; Country; Blues.
Play the playlist
1. Ask the group to name different types of music.
2. Play a piece of music from the playlist. Each piece only needs to play for around 30 seconds.
3. Ask if anyone can guess what type of music it is.
4. Continue going through the playlist, discussing the different genres and features of the music.
Discuss genres
1. Split everyone into small groups.
2. Ask them to discuss with each other what their favourite type of music is. Does anyone have a favourite song or artist? What type of music do they think their favourite song is?
Promote your dream concert
1. Explain that a concert is an event where musicians and singers perform their music.
2. Hand out the equipment needed for this activity.
3. Ask participants to design a poster for the best concert ever. What would their dream concert be? If they could attend a concert where all their favourite artists would be performing, who would they want to be there? (This can include artists who are dead.) They can draw the artists, symbols/icons and instruments.
4. After they have made their posters, ask if anyone would like to share their dream concert with the group.
Reflection
- Music can enhance or change our moods and feelings. It’s also a way of expressing ourselves. Have you ever listened to music to match your mood: happy and lively songs when you’re feeling happy, or slow and sad songs when you’ve felt upset or down?
- Have you listened to music to change your mood or feelings? For example, if you’re feeling upset, listened to happy songs to cheer yourself up?
