Introduction / Icebreakers
Let’s look at some cool things with shapes - optical illusions
Activity 1 - tesselation artwork - 60 minutes, largely in the zoom room, as girls feel confident with what they’re doing, they can leave, or stay to ask questions
discussion about shapes. what shapes tesselate, why do shapes tesselate, how can we make this more interesting? What about irregular shapes?
First, try out the method with something simple
1) start with a base shape - square, rectangle and cut it out.
2) draw a squiggle on one side.
3) cut carefully along the line. DO NOT CUT ACROSS THE SHAPE
4) transfer to opposite side of shape and sellotape on
5) repeat for other pair of sides
6) now we have a shape that will tesselate!
7) draw around it, then lift off and line it up next to the first shape. repeat several times in a grid formation
8) colour each shape differently
second method possible using tracing paper/baking parchment
Do animals tesselate?
Use the same method.
Girls can use their own imagination, play around until they get an animal shape, use google or take inspiration
from one a few examples I’ll show (here’s one I made earlier)
