Description

The Impact of Oil Spills on the Environment (SDGs)

Outcomes:
1. . Learn about the impact of oil on the environment
2. Understand why oil and water cannot mix

Resources

- Oil (sunflower oil, olive oil)
- Water
- Food colouring
- Clear plastic container (not very small)
- Another container to transfer oil into
- Spoon
- Sponge/cotton wool
- String
- Kitchen roll
- Other materials you think would work to remove oil from water

Instructions

Introduction / Icebreakers
Welcome and explain what the session will be about. Ask what they already know out oil spills, their impact on the environment and animals, examples of oil spills they may have heard of, etc.

Activity 1
Explain how oil spills occur and their impact on the environment while using a PowerPoint to show images and videos. Discuss ways people can remove oil spills from the water, such as using absorbers, booms, dispersants and skimmers. I will describe how these are used and show images and/or videos. They will also learn about the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill: how it happened, the results, how the spill affected surrounding areas and about the efforts to clean up the spill.

Activity 2
For the activity they will be creating an oil spill simulation in their containers. I will also do the activity on camera to guide them through. They will pour water into their clear container and mix the oil and food clouring together. They will then pour the oil mixture into the water. We will discuss what observations they made such as the oil and water not mixing (explain that they don’t mix due to the difference in density) and the food colouring mixing with the water(explain that the food colouring represents the chemicals in the oil spreading in the water). The girls will then attempt to separate the oil from the water with a spoon, string, sponge etc. It will be difficult to separate the two.

Debrief/Discussion
We will discuss their observations and what material they thought was the best at removing the oil. We will discuss the use of non renewable energy (oil) and some better alternatives (renewable energy). They can ask any questions they might have.
