Description
Water Wonderworld (STEAM)
Outcomes:
1. Exploration and Observation
2. Critical thinking and Scientific Method – working toward hypotheses
3. Problem solving
Resources
- Basics: water, a transparent narrow glass or jar, a shallow bowl or basin, a spoon
- Card and scissors
- A handful of coins, a small square of aluminium foil (10 cm square, 4 in square)
- For added thrills: ground pepper, salt, washing up liquid and cornstarch
Optional: a couple of cotton swabs, ice cubes, and if you have one, an eyedropper
Instructions
Introduction / Icebreakers
Emphasis on electronics and water activity on different surfaces: table and floor, table and chair, reinforcing that water must never approach electronics!
Activity 1
Activities Exploring Surface Tension
A sequence of small activities exploring the properties of water
Predictions on what will happen and why
Activity 2
A Deeper Dive into Density
Using the steps an engineer would take: explore, create, improve and share
Building a better boat
Exploring density
Activity 3
Playing with Oobleck – properties of a non-Newtonian fluid
Debrief/Discussion
As we go, creating hypotheses, why? Why not? Conclusions
Connecting to more advanced scientific approaches
Acknowledgement/Source
