Description
Overcoming barriers (SDGs)
1. Understanding what the impact of gender stereotypes are and how they can hold females back from
reaching their potential.
2. Name the perceived barriers to leadership and recognises the qualities of leaders.
3. Identify skills and qualities that the Guides have that makes them Leaders.
Resources
Paper, post its, or small pieces of paper, pens, will be required to do a scavenger hunt for items that mean something to them and coloured sweets i.e., smarties, M&Ms, skittles.
Instructions
Introduction / Icebreakers
Gender Equality:
Introduction to Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 5.
Watch two videos on Gender Inequality, stereotypes and barriers.
Discussion on gender terms: glass ceiling, broken rung, gate keeping, girl boss, etc., what Senior Branch members think those words mean to them and whether they feed into inequalities, stereotypes and barriers.
Activity 1
Leadership:
Ask the Senior Branch members what they think the stats for women in leadership roles are, allow them to guess and then reveal current stats.

Discuss the barriers of the terms, in the video and what other barriers, consider confidence, communications and lack awareness of opportunities.

Activity 2
Communications:
Scavenger Hunt: Senior Branch members will be asked to find five items that mean something to them, these can be anything whether they are participating at home or in a Unit.
Senior Branch members will be asked to imagine they are in an interview setting and have to sell their skills and qualities based off the items they have gathered, i.e., my camp blanket means that I am committed to my role as a Guide Leader, it also representatives a time when I ran a camp fire for both my own Unit and the Brownie Unit in my area and I had to ensure that all the girls had a great time while
ensuring the space was safe.
Those that are happy to share can share to the group others will be encouraged to write it down in a journal style.
Debrief/Discussion
Discuss how it’s important to think of how our own skills and qualities could make us a Leaders and overcome some of the stereotypes of Leaders as men. Final exercise is for girls to take pull 3-5 sweets from their colourful sweets and then think of an answer based on the colour they chose.

Purple: Time you lead something
