Description

The BB Severn Challenge is an exciting week-long adventure down the River Severn. The 144 mile (230km) route follows the historic Severn Navigation from its highest point at Pool Quay to the docks at Sharpness.

The Severn Challenge is run with the dual aims of being a challenging and fun event and a sponsored event to raise funds for participants' BB Companies or other chosen charities. Charity choice is up to the participant, but support for the BB and the BB's chosen charity for the year is encouraged.

The event is normally run every two years and takes place in the Easter holidays. The dates are chosen to coincide with most school's holidays. Participants may join in for the whole week or just a day, but priority will be given to those paddling the whole river.
The event doesn't happen on its own and we will need a support crew to look after the paddlers. There are opportunities for adult staff and young leaders too. Joining us for the week as a volunteer could also count as your Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Residential.

PADDLERS:
Paddle a kayak on your own or as a pair or paddle a canoe as a two or three or four. You’ll paddle in small groups of a similar standard and take daily kit with you. Each day's paddling will be averaging about 20 miles which is about 5-6 hours paddling time plus stops for snacks, lunch etc.
Accommodation will be indoors, so you won’t need to take camping gear with you.
Before joining the Severn Challenge, participants need to know how to paddle a canoe or kayak. This could be done as a Company activity, with the BB Canoe Club or through an outside provider.

SUPPORT STAFF:
We need support staff to help with several roles:
Transport of paddlers to and from the river and safety support during the day; Provision of meals and refreshments; Accommodation team to manage overnight locations; Media team - to document the event and update the website and social media.

Accommodation is arranged in suitable hostels / halls etc at different locations as we travel down the length of the River.
The "Grand Finish" is timed for early afternoon on day 7 at Saul Junction, by invitation of the Canal Trust.

All members of the Brigade in Company and older, male or female and staff, are invited to participate in the Challenge. Places are limited for the full challenge, but there will be opportunity for additional paddlers to join for shorter periods during the week and in particular for the final day, using their own transport and kit.

See our websites www.severnchallenge.co.uk or www.severnchallenge.org.uk for more detail.

Resources

You will need to provide your own canoe / kayak and appropriate canoeing equipment (e.g. buoyancy aids) and clothing. Although it is possible that some equipment can be borrowed from the BB Canoe Club with prior arrangement.
Clothing for evenings and overnight, plus personal bedding / hygiene etc.

The full list of requirements is on the website.

Company Staff will be required to take responsibility for their own under 18 members at overnight accommodation, although during the day we will work in appropriate groups to ensure experienced and qualified water leadership for each group.
Transport, Catering etc will be arranged by the Challenge on a pooled basis.
Non-paddling staff will be welcome (and needed!) to undertake various administrative, transport and hospitality roles.

Instructions

You will need to register through your Company Captain.

Email join@severnchallenge.co.uk and ask for the event to be shared with your Company.
