Description

Make percussion instruments using plastic bottles, pots and cans
Then in groups or pairs practice playing known tunes, play them to the rest of the group for them to Name That Tune!


Resources

Empty plastic drinks bottle (small) with screw top lid- minimum
Paper and glue/ stickers/ pens/paints to decorate the bottles
Empty cans and plastic pots
Items for striking eg chopsticks, spoons, plastic forks etc
Items for filling bottles: eg rice, pasta, beans, small stones, sand - there's no limit but a selection is good so you can discuss the different types of sound made.
Rubber bands for strumming and plucking
Plastic pots that will fit the bands so they are taut but not tight
A selection of song titles in case the young people are struggling to think any up, simple ones like nursery rhymes

Instructions

Decorate your plastic bottle
Add the rattly contents of your choice- make it a great sound!
Screw on the lid
Shake away

Pick your other percussion instruments - one can per group and something to strike it with, one plastic box and band per group
Pick 3 songs, go and practice
Get back together and take it in turns to perform your piece for the rest to guess
