Description

Play a wild game of skills and teamwork to show you are up for team-working and challenge!

Resources

This is an adaption of a family board game called BEAT THE PARENTS.

Two teams (eg lodges) compete to complete challenges. The first team to get their avatar to the END zone of the playing area is the winner.

Prepare the challenges:
Write out between 30 and 45 index cards each with a different challenge. Each challenge should pit two teams (individuals, pairs or the whole teams) against each other in a show of skill, speed, dexterity or persistence.
Here are some examples:
- Find a player from your team who thinks they can do this challenge. Have them name the months with 31 days in order correctly the first time (January, March, May, July, August, October, December).
- All play! One by one, an adult makes the different faces you'd see for the 5 emoji listed next. The first team to guess 3 emoji moods or emotions correctly wins the challenge. (Happy, Sad, Vomiting, Blowing a kiss, Sleeping)
- Choose a play from the other team to go against! Shoes off! While sitting at the table, first player to touch their nose to their foot wins the challenge.

These examples are based on Challenges created for BEAT THE PARENTS board game. You could use the Beat the Parents game cards if you have them - but remember to adapt them for Beavers, particularly when it comes to choosing who will do a challenge. The internet can be great source of Beavers friendly challenges (think party games). Make sure everyone can have a chance at something (not one person being ignored or repeatedly picked). Remember, Beavers will have different levels of reading & writing skills so it is important that challenges where these are necessary can be voluntary.

Prepare the props:
Some challenges will require props. Review the challenge cards and make sure you have the necessary props. This could include: playing cards; paper; pens; pencils; coins; bank notes etc.

Prepare the playing area/game board:
Whether played on a board or scaled up in a hall, set up a START and END point and set out 32 markers (x) in TWO paths of 16 between them. Every 4th marker along either path is a CHALLENGE (C) marker. The marker in each row just by the END is always a FINAL CHALLENGE (FC) marker.

START > x > x > x > C > x > x > x > C > x > x > x > C > x > x > x > FC > END

Decide how to organise the teams. Make sure there is a clear area for the audience. You could also have a "play zone" where the challenges are undertaken (except for "all play"). You will probably need a table and chairs to assist some of the challenges.

Don't forget to have a scorekeeper.

REMEMBER: Use the Safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. https://cms.scouts.org.uk/media/10684/safety-checklist-leaders-2020.pdf. Document appropriate risk assessments for your setting.

Instructions

Play the game:
Toss a coin to decide which team goes first.

Team members should take it in turns to roll the dice/toss the coin. One player take their turn to roll a dice or toss a coin to determine the number of steps to move each turn. It's up to you how to set this up, eg: heads = 1 step, tales = 2 steps; dice roll 1,2,3 = move that number of steps, 4,5,6 = 0 steps etc. See what works best for you.

When a player lands on a CHALLENGE marker the person leading the game takes a Challenge Card from the stack and explains what to do. The winning team move forward 2 spaces (or adjust to 1 space if things move too fast). The go ends and the other team has their go.

Winning
REGARDLESS of the steps rolled/flipped, every team stops on the FINAL CHALLENGE marker. They can only leave the marker if they win a final challenge on their own turn (ie if they win a challenge when it's the other team's go, they stay where they are).

Winner is the first team to reach the END after successfully completing a FINAL CHALLENGE on their own turn.

The decision of the scorekeeper is FINAL in the event of a dispute.

Remember - the idea is fun challenges. Adapt and adjust the ideas to suit. Got any great challenge ideas? Add them as a comment below for others.
