Instructions
1. In groups, the young people suggest ideas for where it might be safe / unsafe to use a canoe or kayak (think back to their experience at the Watersports Centre). This made include general and more specific ideas, e.g.
- river / canal / sea / lake
- would a fast-flowing river be safe?
- consider weather conditions: calm v windy day
- consider access: public jetty / slipway or a slippery, muddy bank
- consider companions: does an adult know where you are? Is this an organised activity?
2. Gather these ideas and share them with the wider group. Discuss why something is safe / unsafe.
3. Play the game: young people pretend to "paddle" around the room in their pretend kayaks (can they remember the correct hold from their experience at the Watersports Centre?). Leaders (or young people) call out different scenarios. If it's safe, then keep paddling; if it's not, then mime sinking to the bottom.
Suggested scenarios (mix and match):
- Watersports Centre jetty / slipway on a calm day
- Watersports Centre on a stormy day
- Wide, calm river
- Fast flowing river
- Quiet stretch of canal with an adult
- Busy stretch of canal
- Choppy lake on your own
- Calm lake with a watersports instructor
etc
