Instructions
Music playing quietly while squirrels come in.
The person leading the activity should explain that everyone will be taking turns between playing a musical instrument, and making (and decorating) their own musical shaker.
There will be a 5 minute discussion about different kinds of music. Understanding the squirrels favourite kinds of music or their favourite songs, and how it makes them feel.
The group will be split into two, with one group taking turns learning about and trying to play the instruments, and the second group creating their shakers before switching.
One adult will lead the instrument groups, discussing the names of instruments and letting the squirrels share and play them.
Another adult will supervise the shaker activity.
Everyone should spend a few minutes decorating their cups.
Once people finish decorating their cups, they should put a handful of dried beans, peas, or rice in one cup, then cover it with the other cup. They should have sticky tape to keep it in place.
An adult may need to help with this – sticking the cups together is especially fiddly.
When everyone has finished, they should sit in a circle with their shakers.
The people leading the activity should put the chairs and tables away so there’s plenty of space for everyone to dance.
Let’s dance!
Everyone should chat about why dancing is a great thing to do.
Think about how it keeps you active, it’s fun, and it makes you feel good.
The person leading the activity should put some music on. Everyone should play their music shakers and dance around the space.
Make sure the music is suitable for the young people and that there’s enough space to move around. You could start with an action song – it’ll get everyone moving as they have fun following the actions.
The person leading the activity should give everyone the chance to showcase their dance moves if they want to. Some people might want to teach the rest of the group a dance move.
When everyone’s finished dancing, they should chat about how dancing and playing music made them feel.
