Pancake Hunt

Description

For Pancake Day, we decided to link our cooking activity to some of the badge requirements for the Cubs Chef activity badge. This game helps teach the children about food groups by linking the various ingredients in the recipe to the groups they belong within.

Resources

One pancake recipe, pancake ingredients, coloured paper, a copy of the food pyramid.

Instructions

Cut out "pancakes" (circles) from paper and write the name of a food group on the back of each one. Hide them around the room, then challenge the Cubs to find them. (Perhaps ask them to find one each to make it more fair, so that someone fast doesn't get them all.) When they find a pancake, they run back to the centre. Then, lead them to table where you've set up the ingredients for your recipe. Ask the person with the "grain" pancake if they can identify which ingredient is theirs, then the same for "dairy," and so forth. When it comes time to make the recipe, each Cub can be responsible for measuring or pouring whichever ingredient they found in the hunt.

Consider allergies and intolerances when selecting your recipe.
