Description
Make borax crystals for Explore Science. From the GGNZ resource for Explore Science - Brownies.
Resources
Materials:
1 cup boiling water
3 tablespoons Borax
Pipe cleaners
Thread
Popsicle stick or similar
Clear jar
Instructions
Instructions:
1. Bend your pipe cleaner into a compact shape, try not to leave any gaps
2. Tie a length of thread to the pipe cleaner. Cut away the excess thread after the knot. Now tie the other end of your thread to your popsicle stick or similar so that you can rest your stick on top of the jar and your pipe cleaner is hanging down without touching the bottom or sides of the jar
3. In your jar, pour the boiling water and add the borax and stir until the water becomes clear and the majority of the Borax is dissolved. For best results, add enough Borax that you can see a small pile of it on the bottom after stirring until the water is clear
4. Place your hanging pipe cleaner over the jar, immersing it in your borax solution. Cover your jar loosely with something to keep it warm longer, slower cooling can mean bigger crystals
5. Put your jar in a safe place and leave the crystals to grow
