Dancing pictures

Description
Simple science experiment
Draw pictures on a plate or bowl, add water and watch them magically lift up and dance
How it works: The ink in non permanent markers are made of solid particles suspended in alcohol or other rapidly evaporating solvent. This quickly evaporates when the pen is used to draw the shapes, leaving the solid behind. Add water slowly to the edge, roll the plate to cover the picture and watch it lift up. Then swirl about to watch the shapes dance
Resources
Non permanent marker pens
plates/ bowls - plastic or glass/china; non-patterned
small jugs of water
Instructions
Use the marker to draw shapes on your receptacle - a non patterned surface is best.
Try and make sure the lines are joined up to each other for best results.
Tip the plate/bowl slightly, add water to the edge, roll it flat again to cover the picture you drew. Wait a few seconds then gently move the plate side to side. You will see the picture lift up.
Then it can be swirled around to make it move and dance.
Try: Simple animals, stick figures
