Description

A very quick and easy Orienteering Course activity - developed from the Simple Orienteering Game on OGM. Depending on time available this can be a short 20 minute activity, a full meeting or an afternoon.
This is a great activity for Now you are a Guide as running it with the activities means completion of the Guiding Traditions badge – a number of activities for this badge having been completed as part of Becoming a Guide badge.
PLEASE NOTE THE GUIDING TRADITION BADGE LINKS ARE NOT IN PLACE SHOULD YOU WISH TO JUST RUN THE ORIENTEERING ACTIVITY - THEY WILL NEED TO BE ADDED IF BEING COMPLETED.

Resources

 Buddy burner equipment
 Follow a trail instruction

Instructions

1. Print out the number cards on A5 card.
2. Print out the 4 Patrol cards.
3. Decide on number of activities to be included in the course.
4. Assemble the equipment/materials for included activities.
5. Attach the cards to gardens canes for distribution around the course – in order or not!
6. Create a map for the course – this is an optional activity, alternatively Patrols could sketch/record locations of numbers (Sketch Map) to refer to as they complete the course.
• Option 1 No activities but the course is completed at night with head torches.
• Option 2 Day time quick activity as a Patrol race.
• Option 3 Activities placed around the course at numbers – the number of activities can be as many as time allows.
• Option 4 Place paper stamps/punches at each point.
• NB: this could be adapted to suit any trail or challenge completion activity.
7. Depending on activities included you may need Leaders/supervisors at certain cards, where matches are used.
8. Each Patrol Card has a different starting number at the top. The Patrols head to the first number and, if required, complete the activity at that number or head to the next number as per their Patrol.
9. Each Patrol Card has a unique number series to be logged – this must be checked as correct on completion.
10. On completion Patrols get into the order of the final message.
