Description
Yoga-style poses/stretches based on wild creatures. This activity came from the Wildlife Trusts' "30 Days Wild".
Resources
Diagrams of poses
A main timer (to tell them when to move along)
Yoga mats or similar at each station
Timers at each station
Quiet music (optional)
Could you invite a musician to play while this is happening?
Instructions
Place copies of the picture sheet in four "stations" around the room or outdoor space. Let the Beavers/Cubs/Scouts know which two stretches/poses are going to be done in each station (if you have time you can prep this by circling the relevant poses on the sheets). Remind them to move slowly and be careful of those around them.
Make sure everyone does a few minutes' warm up and a bit of stretching before they begin.
Get them to move around on a timer so that everyone tries every pose. Encourage them to hold each pose for at least ten seconds before changing to the next one. You could have helpers with stop watches at each station, or get individuals in the group to take turns at being the one with the timer.
Remind everyone it should not hurt. If it hurts then stop.
To make this a more mindful experience you could dim lights a little and play quiet music.
If it suits your group you could have a circle time afterwards for people to share their thoughts. Can they think of other good Yoga-type poses based on other wild creatures?
