Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Cycling Proficiency Test based around a story from Baden Powell's time as a Lancer in India

Resources

Cones, hoola hoops, rope loops, staves

Scouts to bring serviceable bikes and helmets (required in POR)

Instructions

If run in conjunction with a bike maintenance activity then a safety check of bikes can be undertaken in advance.

When Baden Powell was a Lancer early in his career in India he and his mates would go out "pig sticking" in the forest. This involved simply trying to skewer a pig in the wild with his lance on horseback. Such ill-informed times!

In this version, Scouts take turns to ride their bikes carrying a stave under their arm (lancer of knight in armour style) and try to hook a hoola hoop held out by a leader. If this proves too little challenge then smaller and smaller hoops can be fashioned using lengths of rope.

If desired, the activity can be preceded by Scouts trying to weave along a slalom course of cones laid out at suitable distances.

Choose a suitable safe area free from cars where you will not be a nuisance to the public.
