LEADER PREPARATION
You’ll need to find something for the collage to be created on. Ideally this should be large enough for the number of children and young people who will be contributing to it. If you are unable to find anything, then a wall or noticeboard could also work.
GETTING INTO THE ACTIVITY
1) Start by talking to the children and young people about what they know about the Queen. Let them share information and talk freely about the life of the Queen. This will help set the scene for the activity, but also provide the group with a valuable opportunity to express their feelings and talk about this significant moment in history.
2) Share some of the ‘Did You Know Facts’ from our downloadable sheet. These should help further explore the significant contribution the Queen made to the life of our country.
3) Having spent time appreciating the decades of service the Queen gave, encourage children and young people to now spend time giving thanks for the life of the Queen, by creating a ‘Thank You Ma’am’ collage.
4) Provide the group with squares of paper or post-it notes (or similar) and pens, pencils, paints etc. Encourage everyone to think about a message of thanks they would like to add to the collage to express their thanks for the Queen and her life.
5) This might be in the form of writing a message or prayer, drawing a picture, writing down some key words of how they will remember the Queen or colouring in some printed images. You may also want to print some images of the Queen throughout her life to add the collage.
6) Children and young people can then create the collage by adding their message / image to the lining paper / mount board / wall. If possible, try to complete this activity with all age groups, creating one collective collage of thanks from children and young people of all ages.
7) Once created, this might make a nice display for within your Church’s building as a point of reflection over the coming weeks and for other parts of the community to add to.
8) Please share a photo of your ‘Thank You Ma’am’ collage with us at The Boys’ Brigade, so we can then display these
online to help share the thanks of BB members across the UK & RoI. You can upload your image to our Book of Condolence at https://boys-brigade.org.uk/hm-the-queen
KEEPING EVERYONE SAFE
Talking about the loss of the Queen may be upsetting for some children. Make sure to approach the topic sensitively and be
prepared to respond should a child become upset. Some resources to support children, young people and leaders can be found at https://ww https://www.childbereavementuk.org
