Description

Help Cubs learn a little about the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, and partake in some traditional food from the festival.

Resources

Sliced Apples
Clear Honey
Pomegranate Seeds
Challah (Sweet bread)

Instructions

Explain to the Cubs about how sweet foods are enjoyed as part of celebrating Rosh Hashanah to celebrate stepping into the new year with good tastes and feelings and the hope of a sweet and bountiful year to come.

Share this traditional blessing (translated from Hebrew) with the Pack before enjoying Apple slices dipped in honey together and wishing each other a Happy Rosh Hashanah:

'We praise you, Eternal God, Sovereign of the Universe, Creator of the fruit of the tree.
May it be you will, Eternal our God, that this be a good and sweet year for us.'

Let the Cubs try the pomegranate seeds whilst explaining that Jews believe the pomegranate represents the world, and that they believe there are 613 seeds inside each one. The 613 seeds represent the 613 mitzvoth (or commandments) in the Torah (Jewish Holy Book).

If you have Challah, share this too, or else explain to the Cubs that it is a sweet bread, braided and shaped into a circle to represent unity and the circularity of the years passing.
