Instructions

Introduce the badge to the girls.

SAY: Can anyone tell me... What does the word “Cyber” mean? Has anyone heard of the word Cyber?

Action: give the Ladybirds a chance to think and answer

The word “Cyber” means anything to do with the internet – we are going to talk about what the internet is and how we use it in a few minutes
In this Cyber Smart badge, we are going to learn about how we can stay safe and be smart when we are using the internet.

Explain the girls what the Internet is.

ASK: does anyone here know what the internet is?

SAY: To try and understand what the internet is, let’s use the example of a tree. You can use the image in the first page of the attachments to support you with a visual. Note: You can approach the analogy of the tree either top down (leaves to roots) or bottom up (roots to leaves) depending on which works better for you.
Each leaf on the tree represents our homes, which contain many devices and machines that are connect to the internet and help us in our everyday lives.
The leaves are connected to branches. These branches represent cables that are connected to the trunk.
The leaves communicate with each other, so they are all green. They share the energy they get from the roots and the sunshine.
The roots represent the computers or servers that contain the information that we receive from the internet.
You can see then that homes are connected to cables which are connected to the servers which contains the information that we receive from the internet just as leaves are connected to the branches and trunk which are connected to the root.

Ladybird should now take part to activity one: How does my home connect to the Internet? (See attachment 1)

Print off enough of the activity one sheet (each Ladybird requires one).
Cut out a hole on the top and bottom where indicated.
Cut off lengths of string in sufficient quantities (each Ladybird requires one)
Create a tree trunk from a cardboard box

Ladybirds should draw a picture of their houses and connect the pictures at the top to the length of string provided. Lie the tree trunk on the floor and create a tree using a collage of the picture of the houses on the outside. The strings should all face in, so it represents their homes connected using the “internet tree”.

Have a chat with Ladybird on how the internet works

SAY: So, we now know how all our homes connect to the internet… but now let’s talk about how we use the internet inside our homes!
ASK: can you think of ways that you use the internet when you are at home?
ACTION: have the ladybird list things in the home that connect the internet – tablets, their TV, google/Alexa, PCs Laptops and add things they maybe don’t think of to give them a sense of how much the internet is used I their everyday lives:
- Lights
- Heating/water controls
- Radio
- Smart appliances (fridge/washing machine)
- Plugs
- Fridges
- Washing Machines

SAY: So, we know now that our homes connect to the internet and that we use many devices and appliances in our home on the internet
ASK: can you tell me how the devices connect to the internet inside the home?
SAY: the cables coming into our homes connect to a device called a modem. All our devices in our houses connect to the modem.
ASK: can you tell me what ways our devices connect to the modem?
SAY: think about if you were watching YouTube or Disney channel on your tablet, is there a wire connecting your tablet to the internet or can you watch it without any wires? Being able to connect your devices to the modem is called wireless or WIFI connection. Most devices these days do not need to be connected to the internet using a cable, they can connect using WIFI. WIFI uses waves to connect devices to the modem.
So, the internet is connected to our homes using cables, the wires are connected to the modem to bring information into the house and our devices connect to the modem using Wi-Fi.

Activity 2: How do my devices connect to the Internet? (See attachment 2)

Each Ladybird draws a picture of a device in their home that is connected to the internet and adds the string through the cut-out hole – Ladybirds decide if the device should be connected to the internet in their home with a cable (so will use the string) or wirelessly (so will use the Invisible Thread)

Using the floor and the tree already created the pictures from the children are connected to their homes using the String or Invisible Thread
