Making your heart work faster!

Copies of the healthy/unhealthy foods pdf. I would suggest enough pictures in total for each Beaver Scout in your colony to go hunting about 5 times.

BBQ Skewers

Fruit cut into inch sized chunks - check for allergies beforehand!

Instructions

Treasure Hunt:
1. Cut up the sheets of healthy/unhealthy food and hide them around the meeting place.
2. This is an activity for all Beavers to participate in. I do this as a team relay where colonies or small groups take turns each to go and find one picture at a time and returning them to the team. No cheating by collecting more than one at a time! This could be done as a timed task or a first team finished task.
3. Once the teams are finished collecting, go through and ask the Beavers to tell you if the different foods are healthy or unhealthy. Then, count the number of healthy foods their team collected - a winning team could be the team with most healthy foods in total, you could add an element of jeopardy by taking away the number of unhealthy foods they found from their total or allocating teams finishing points if they did the relay, e..g if you finished 1st of 5, your team scores an extra 5 points, 2nd - 4points, 3rd - 3points etc.

Fruit kebabs:
1. The Beavers must wash their hands and give the surface a clean - talk briefly about the importance of this.
2. Provide each child with a piece of greaseproof paper or paper plate to work on and a skewer.
3. Beavers choose fruit chunks to put on their skewers to make their fruit kebabs.
4. Whilst they're making their kebabs, talk about their favourite fruits, other types of kebabs they might have had, where they have eaten these fruits/kebabs, if they were to make a kebab of their favourite foods, what would be on their skewer?

Making your heart work faster:
This could be done in a number of ways but whichever way you decide to do this, ask BS to think about how they feel before and after doing the activity. Ask about how their heart feels. Ask if anyone knows where their heart is and how to find their heart rate. BS could:
1. Stand in a circle. Each (or choose a number of) BS chooses one exercise which everyone in the group does.
2. Stations type game where exercises are posted on the wall. BS run around, on the whistle each goes to the nearest exercise station, throw 2 dice, they need to do the exercise the sum of the dice times. e.g.. 2 and 5 = 7 star jumps.
3. Have a skipping or hula hooping competition.
4. Play a physically challenging game e.g.. crab football or tag.
