Requirements: Complete four activities around Robotics and LEGO
WHAT IS A ROBOT? (Option 1 of 4)

Outcome: Girls develop an awareness of Robots and the benefits to be had from the work they can do – learn about the use of robotics in hospitals, factories and even in their homes


Resources

Pictures of Robots (attached)

Instructions

• Cut out (and laminate for future use if wanted) the individual pictures of robots / robotic devices
• Put the pictures face down in the middle of the group of girls and select a ladybird to pick a picture and say what she sees.
• Ask the girls some questions (examples below) to try and encourage discussion on how important robots are:-

- What do you think this robot does?
- Can you think of anything else robots do?
- Can you think of anything that robots might be able to do in the future?

DEFINITION OF A ROBOT
There are many definitions of a robot which might be too difficult for a Ladybird to fully grasp so if a leader can simplify the following statement:
A robot is any automatically operated machine that replaces human effort, though it may not resemble human beings in appearance or perform functions in a humanlike manner.
