Description
Aim of the Badge: To take on a robotics challenge so Brownies can experience for themselves that STEM learning is fun.
Complete all four robotics badge elements.
As a Six, take on a robotics challenge using the LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 or Spike Essential Kit. Complete at least two building and coding projects from the Lesson Plans.
Outcomes: Girls develop an awareness of colour, building and movement all of which are important in robotics.
Resources
- WeDo or Spike Essential Kit per Six
- Batteries (for WeDo kit)
- Tablet or laptop per Six
- WeDo or Spike app on laptop or tablet
Instructions
WeDo and Spike Essential sets may be borrowed from National Office between March and September, when the FIRST LEGO League is not in session.
Please note all robotics kits must be handle with care and returned in full to National Office with their element sorting sheet completed.
- Download the WeDo or Spike app to the laptop or tablet each Six will be using for this exercise in advance.
- Ensure the WeDo has batteries or the Spike Essential hub is fully charged.
- Within each Six, select a design and build activity to complete on the WeDo or Spike app.
o WeDo: Open the WeDo app, go to Classroom Projects and select a project to suit your Six. Use the Getting Started or Guided Projects.
Milo the Science Rover is a good place to start. You can then add on the Motion Senior, Tilt Sensor and/or put two together and
collaborate.
o Spike Essential: Open the Spike app, choose Essential and select a Unit Plan project to suit your Six.
- Working as a team, follow the story line to build your robot.
- Follow the coding prompts to build your code and run it on your hub. Don’t forget to connect your hub to your laptop/tablet.
- Improve the design of your build by adding more LEGO elements.
- Improve your code by adding more coding blocks.
- Share what you have designed and built with your Unit.
- As a Six, explain how you improved your design and your code.
- When the task is completed, power down your Spike Essential or WeDo hub by holding the power button for at least 10 seconds until the hub is fully off. Return it to the correct kit.
- As a Six, sort all the LEGO elements back into their correct sorting tray. Check the floor area to ensure no small parts have been missed.
- Return all equipment to National Office with a completed element checklist.
- Send lego@irishgirlguides.ie an email if there are any missing parts.
