Various types of chocolate - several fairtrade options and one or two non-fairtrade. Its easiest to use bars which are divided into segments. Have enough that everyone gets one segment of each.
Added Fairtrade poster to discuss benefits of fairtrade

Instructions

Talk about what fairtrade chocolate is (Lots of resources online for this, see for example https://www.fairtrade.org.uk/buying-fairtrade/chocolate/) Talk about farmers getting a fair price for their beans and why this is important.

Introduce the idea that when we go to a shop to buy chocolate we have a choice of buying fairtrade or non-fairtrade.

How do you know the difference? Show the beavers the fairtrade symbol to watch out for.

Do the Beavers think most chocolate in the shops is fairtrade, or just a few bars? Do they think the 'big name' chocolate brands are fairtrade or not? (Answer Cadbury is fairtrade, Galaxy and Mars are not. Mars do use fairtrade chocolate but their other ingredients are not all fairtrade so they don't have the full certification)

Run a taste testing session with the range of chocolate you have and ask the Beavers to score the choices. See files for a template scoring sheet. Put the wrapper out with the chocolate so the Beavers can check to see if it has a fairtrade mark or not.

Afterwards, discuss which was everyone's favourite. Did everyone agree? Next time you are in a shop will you look out for the fairtrade symbol when buying chocolate.
