Description
Weans make a jeely piece and throw to their partner who has to catch it
Resources
1 slice bread per cub plus 1 extra for demonstration
butter/marg
jam
small bit of greaseproof paper per person
Knife, preferably plastic.
Instructions
Inspired by the Glasgow folk song The Jeely Piece song which we will be teaching our cubs as part of the Scottish thistle challenge award. Others may want to teach it as a part of folk history no longer with us, although I can remember shouting up for a jeely piece. https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/history/glasgow-famous-jeely-piece-song-23054123 is a link to find the song. I'm sure there will be translations somewhere for those who come from outwith the Glasgow area.
Depending on the age group leaders may want to demonstrate how to make a Jeely piece before starting the game.
Pair off Cubs/scouts and have them stand at opposite ends of the hall. 1 side of hall has the bread, butter, jam and paper set on a table in front of them. Each cub has to make a jeely piece (or sandwich) by spreading a layer of butter and then jam onto the bread. Fold in half and you have a jeely piece. Now wrap in the greaseproof paper and throw to partner on other side of hall who has to catch it.
Once every cub on piece making side has thrown their sandwich swap sides over and repeat.
Everyone is a winner in this game as they all get to eat a jeely piece at the end.
