Description
Learn words and simple phrases in another language by playing a whispering game.
Resources
None (prepare with knowledge of some words or simple phrases in another language).
If you aren't confident using another language, you can start the game off using recordings/apps and headphones (e.g Google Translate).
You could introduce the game with the name "The Whisper Game" or "Whispers", translated into the language you're learning.
Instructions
Type 1) Co-operative Play:
a) Line the players up, sitting or standing (or have them in a circle with the Leader at a place in the circle too, to mark the beginning and end).
b) The Leader whispers a word or simple phrase, in another language, into one player's ear (e.g. "bonjour"). The players then pass what they hear on to the next player by whispering into their ear, one-by-one, until they reach the end of the line (or the circle returns to the Leader). The final player announces what they think they heard. (e.g. "pondor!")
c) The Leader reveals what was initially whispered (i.e. how it should have sounded - "bonjour") and explains what it means (e.g. "hello").
d) Optional: Then have each player say the word or phrase, in the same order but out loud, now they know what it should sound like, to help them remember it.
e) Play again with another word/phrase.
Tip: Start with easier whispers and make them more difficult each round.
Badge: Include Greetings and be sure to have the players repeat the word back, to meet the badge requirement.
Type 2) Competitive Play:
This version can be good to play on its own, or after co-operative play using the same words. Doing the latter gives an advantage to the team who better remembered what they just learned.
a) Split the players into two teams. Have each team's first player hear from the Leader at the same time and then pass to their respective teammates (as above, in Co-operative Play).
b) Have someone impartial judge which team stayed closest to the original whisper. Give a point for the team with the most accurate final whisper, and another point if either team can tell you what the whisper means in their own language.
