Description

Resources for a French café roleplay with French language prompt cards for Beavers and Leaders.

Resources

Print off the menu and scripts.
Pancakes (pre-made, or made at a separate station).
Ham and cheese
Chocolate.
Strawberries.
Lemon and sugar/honey.
Red berry squash.
Orange squash.
Table space and chairs.
Cutlery and plates.

Optional: Traditional French music on speaker, tablecloths, LED candles, print off the café sign.

Instructions

Run through the script with the Beavers and explain they will be having a French Café experience. Show them that the left side is the waiter (Leader) and the right side is the customer (Beaver). Leave copies of the script and menu on their tables for them to look at.

Show that the red text is French, the black text is English and the big blue text is the sounds that the Beavers might try to make, to speak the French. Focus on Bonjour and Merci but run through the others as well. Explain the aim will be to not use English when explaining what food and drink they would like.

Seat the Beavers and take their orders as per the script. Use gestures to help them understand what is happening, for example pointing to the menu. Give Beavers a little time to work out how to respond with French and gestures, but feel free to use English if they struggle. Beavers might not use much French, but try to get them to try saying "Bonjour" when you start and "Merci" when their food comes out, repeating after you if needed.

This game goes nicely with "Flip the Crêpe" (also on OSM).
