• Teatowel or heatproof gloves
• Equipment to melt chocolate (see instructions)

• Toppings (cookie crumbs, nuts, popping candy or similar)

Instructions

시작하기 전에 (Before start)
• Use the safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. Additional help to carry out your risk assessment, including examples, can be found here. Don’t forget to make sure all young people and adults involved in the activity know how to take part safely.
• Make sure you’ll have enough adult helpers. You may need some parents and carers to help if you’re short on helpers
• Check for any dietary requirements or allergies within your group before you begin.

Using a kitchen and preparing to cook 
• You could run our kitchen safety and hygiene activities, Kitchen risk bingo and Home kitchen hygiene prior to running this session.
• Remember to have a hand washing station and set up a separate sink for handwashing, if you can. Take extra hygiene precautions when handling raw meat, such as regular hand washing, having separate equipment for raw and cooked meat, and washing up equipment as soon as it's been used. Take a look at our guidance on food preparation.
• Make sure you have all the ingredients ready. 
• Remember to check your ingredients against any allergy or dietary requirements to ensure everyone can enjoy the recipe. This may mean using alternative ingredients.

준비해 (Get Ready)
Depending on who’s doing this activity, this section could be completed before you start the session by the person running the activity.

• Everyone should have a plate, tray, or sheet of foil or greaseproof paper in front of them to catch any drips or toppings
• Prepare the toppings, so that they can be sprinkled over the biscuit sticks. Crush nuts, crumble cookies, pour out sprinkles or popping candy, dice dried fruits and put them into bowls.
• Melt the chocolate.
• There’re several ways chocolate can be melted:

On the hob:
• Break the chocolate into small chunks and place them into a glass bowl
• Place the bowl on top of a saucepan of simmering water
• Stir the chocolate until it’s completely melted
• Remember, the glass bowl will be hot, so use heatproof gloves or a tea towel to remove it from the pan and leave it to cool on a heatproof surface

In the microwave:
• Break the chocolate into small chunks and place them into a microwavable bowl
• Put in the microwave and heat for 15 seconds
• Stir the chocolate
• Repeat the above 2 steps until the chocolate is completely melted
• Remember, the glass bowl will be hot, so use heatproof gloves or a tea towel to remove it from the microwave and leave it to cool on a heatproof surface

• The melted chocolate could be divided between the group into smaller bowls, or several bowls could be made, so everyone has access to one. Similarly, the toppings could be divided into smaller bowls for each group or table, or a toppings station could be made for people to go up to.
• Everyone should stand or sit in front of their plate, tray, or tinfoil or greaseproof paper.
• Give each person a biscuit stick.
• They should then dip their biscuit stick in the melted chocolate, leaving at least 3cm uncovered.
• Keeping the chocolate-dipped biscuit stick over the plate/tray, people should sprinkle over the toppings of their choice.
• Place the biscuit stick on a lined tray or plate and let it set.
• These steps could be repeated for people to make a few biscuit sticks and change the toppings.

Reflection
This activity gave everybody the opportunity to try something new and develop their skills. You’ve made a popular snack in Korea, have you tried Pepero sticks before? There were different steps to making this, were they easy to make? Would you have a go at this activity again? Melting chocolate can be done in a few ways, which way did you choose?
