Instructions

Talk about how the bee hotel will help bees and other mini creatures by giving them a safe home. Talk about how many plants and animals depend on each other for the things they need. Ask the squirrels what food bees gives us, hopefully they say honey, explained how they also help provide food for us through pollination. Bees drink nectar from flowering plants. Many plants rely on bees for pollination so they can produce fruit, which contain the seeds of the next generation. Here’s how it works. A bee flies from flower to flower, drinking the nectar. As the bee feeds, it is also moving pollen from one flower to another. Pollen is the yellow, powdery stuff that helps plants reproduce. The bee is fed, and the plant is helped, too!

To make a bee home:
1) cut the A4 scrap paper in half so you now have two A5 sized pieces of paper
2) roll the paper around the pencil, squirrels may need help with this part, then pull the pencil out. Put tape around the rolled paper, so you have a thick tube of paper. Make approx. 30 of these, the squirrels will need enough to fill the can. (You could collect sticks and use these to fill the cans too). Alternatively you could use a plant pot and hollow canes.
3) Get a tin can/small plant pot making sure there aren't any really sharp edges and fill the bottom with glue.
4) Put the two toilet rolls into the tin can/plant pot.
5) Now fill all the gaps with the rolls of paper, making sure they not squashed, if you have collected any stick theses can be used to fill the gaps too. Cut up canes that are hollow could be used for this part.
6) Make sure they are all stuck in, use more glue if needed.
7) Tie string on the top and bottom ends of the can/plant pot, leave spare string so that the bee home can be hung up. The bee home will need to be placed at least 3ft off the ground. Alteratively pile up some stones and place the bug home facing slightly downwards to let the water drain out
