Simply colour in the flag parts as instructed, cut out, then fold them over.
A suitable introduction/reflection could be to talk about the Union Flag and its meaning in terms of the United Kingdom:
- The St George's Cross (patron saint of England since the 1270's) is a red cross on a white ground.
- The cross saltire of St Andrew (patron saint of Scotland) is a diagonal white cross on a blue ground.
- These two flags were combined in 1606, after James I succeeded to the throne.
- The cross saltire of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland) is a diagonal red cross on a white ground.
- This was combined with the previous Union Flag of St George and St Andrew, after the Act of Union of Ireland with England (and Wales) and Scotland on 1 January 1801, to create the Union Flag that has been flown ever since.
- See the attached "FlagHistory" image for an easy summary of this.
- The Welsh flag does not appear because when the first Union Flag was created the Principality of Wales was already united with England and was no longer a separate principality.
- The Union Flag is sometimes referred to as the Union Jack, though that term should only really be used when it is flying from a ship.
