Instructions
Have a look at the local war memorial and find names of those who lost their lives in either WW1 or WW2 or both.
Produce a list of names and give each Scout a different name to research and prepare a short presentation on (we usually run this evening after October Half Term so they will have a bit of time for research) It is worth doing a quick check to make sure there is something to find for each name. Some suggestions on info to find are below....
• Full name
• Date of birth
• Date & circumstances of death
• Parents’ names & wife’s name, if married
• Information about where his family lived and any connections with Westbourne
• Service in which he served, e.g. Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Marines
• Service No. & Rank
• Gallantry Awards
• Place of burial, if available
• Memorial on which his name appears (sometimes more than one location)
• Other information, e.g. name of ship, location in which he served etc. & anything else you can find out
• Photos connected with the individual – this may be quite hard, but there may be a few
CWGC.org and findagrave.com are good places to start. Many towns & villages will have local websites or museums with lots of detail.
On the evening find some judges we use GSL, the previous years winner and a local historian. Each Scout then makes their presentation in turn (depending on how many Scouts there are you may need to limit time)
The judges confer and then decide a winner and present a prize.
