Description

to create a map of the local area out of (mainly) natural resources.

The fact this is a craft activity and helps make a map is a side point to the fact it really makes them think about the landmarks in the area and where to place them.

this is easy to tidy up if outside but could do inside too

Resources

All natural resources preferably local to you i.e
Different size stones/gravel
sand
Sticks
Leaves

Maybe a large pies of ply wood or similar, but this can be done on the ground. would be perfect if you have a beach or large sandy area.

If you map has water or train lines, provide something blue/black, we uses an old jumper and we pulled out the wool then some cutlery for the train line. could use recycled materials, fishing nets etc if near a beach

A map of the are that the kids can see of reference

Instructions

Pre planning required if any additional materials, for water, trains etc

You need to be in a space where there are a plethora of natural resources described above.

Draw a simple outline of a map on your surface, (wood stone, use chalk if tarmac area)
The children can then add sticks for roads, stones for houses, grass and leaves for fields and woodland, you could use acorns and pinecones for treas etc then add in the detail using the bigger stones, puns, shops etc .

if their house is on the map then they can show you the way they travel
