Local Hike with bases and activities.

Cubs navigate using map compass and base co-ordinates.
Each base has an activity where they can earn points. They have 10 minutes to complete as much of the activity as possible. (The suggested activities are the ones we used based on badge requirements, adapt to the tasks needed for your cubs badges).

We plotted a flat 2 mile route and this took approximately the right time. Recommend organising which leaders take which task in advance so they can go to base locations before the cubs are assigned to groups. Ideally place the bases in a triangle and start the evening in the centre so they can each start with a separate base (adapt to group numbers).

Instructions

Scoring:
-Each task is scored out of 10.
-Their score out of 10 is given by how well they work as a team, how much help they need from an adult, and how well they do the task.
-Each base has multiple tasks. They have 10 minutes to complete as many as they can. They can get a maximum of 10 points per task, so if they complete all three in the ten minutes they could get 30.
-In addition to the base scores they can get 10 points for navigation and 10 points for working as a team overall. These are awarded by their group leader.
-The first team back having completed each base gets 5 points.
-Any team that arrives late loses 10 points.
-If they do not complete a task because they ran out of time they don't get any points. It is part of their navigation challenge to get to the bases in time.

Suggested tasks for each base:

Base A: Emergency Aid

-Task A1: "A branch has fallen on two members in the group, injuring one person's head and another’s knee. The other members of the group should place bandages on the injured persons." - Emergency Aid badge
-Improvements: Get the “injured” cubs to show where their imaginary wound is before asking them to place bandages.

-Task A: Whilst hiking two members trip up and fall over. One of them has broken their collarbone and the other their arm. Use your neckerchief to put their injuries into the correct sling." - Emergency Aid badge
-Improvements: Get them to show you where they are injured before asking them to place a sling.

-Task A3: "Whilst walking you find two people unconscious on the floor. Use DR ABC to approach them and assess the situation. After assessing them place them in the recovery position." - Emergency aid badge
-Improvements: Ensure this base is located with an appropriate floor space away from road.
Get them to recall DR ABC before they start the role play.

Base B: Pioneering

-Task B1: "You have lots of small pieces of rope but you need a long piece. Attach each of the pieces together using reef knots." - Pioneering badge
-Improvements: Attach pieces rather than ends of the same.

-Task B2: "You need to secure the ends of the rope for lashings. Tie a clove hitch in pairs." - Pioneering badge
-Improvements: Pairs to allow them to hold pole and tie hitch

-Task B3: "To start your cabin building project you need to secure the poles to make a frame. Make a square lashing on the joins of each pole. " - Pioneering badge
-Improvements: In pairs, one of them to hole the poles the other to make the lashing.

Base C:

-Task C1: "Throw 3 bean bags into the bucket." - Athletics badge
- Improvements: A washing up bowl or wide bucket will be easier. Can also use a hoop.
Have enough bean bags so they can go two at a time.

-Task C2: "Sign your name in BSL" - Communicator badge
-Improvements: Using BSL sheet, ask them to spell their name. They can look at the sheet whilst they do it. Long or complicated names suggest a nickname, middle or surname, or six.

-Task C3: "Draw the OS map symbol for:
A church
A car park
A public toilet" - Navigator badge
-Improvements: There are variations of the symbols based on the age of the map and type.
- Church is standard box with cross.
- Car park P in box
- Public toilet - either ? or PC
