The Perilous Journey to Bucktootin

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

This is a fun, all-ages obstacle course. It's easy to adapt for the equipment you have available.

Resources

Hazard 1 - stilts - these could be tin can stilts, or wooden ones
Hazard 2 - tent poles or bamboo poles, pushed into the ground so it's not easy to walk through without touching them
Hazard 3 - use boxes, chairs, etc x3, and two short planks.
Hazard 4 - a long ladder and two boxes or crates
Hazard 5 - a leader or two, water pistols, a bucket, and water. Set this up under trees or near bushes so there is somewhere for the leader to hide.

Ropes for marking the course

Instructions

Divide the main group into smaller groups of up to six people.

To reach Bucktootin, your group will need to overcome many hazards. If you work together, your group will have no trouble reaching Bucktootin.

Hazard 1: To cross this alligator-infested bog, each person will have to use the stilts provided.
Hazard 2: You have reached an area of elephant grass which is three metres high! Creep through it without touching the grass.
Hazard 3: As a group, cross the Limpapa River without getting your feet wet; use the bridge-making materials provided.
Hazard 4: Your group has reached a ravine, spanned by a rickety bridge. Cross it carefully, one at a time.
Hazard 5: A lion is sleeping here. Can you creep past without the big cat spitting at you?

Set up the hazards on a circular course, with each group starting at a different one. Ropes on the ground can mark the edges of the obstacles.
Copy the instructions and give them to each group, or make signs to put up at each obstacle.

This activity can be as short or as long as you like - add extra activities, like throwing a swiss ball between the group without dropping it, or crawling under a cargo net, to expand the course.

It's also very easy to adapt to a theme.

This activity was part of the Jungle Theme Programme in a previous programme, created by GGNZ volunteers.
